The 3.5 tonne vans we offer for hire provide a great solution for those looking to make a move more conveniently. Our extra-long wheel base and Luton sized vans have been called upon by home and office movers, and they’re the largest vans you can hire without taking special tests and adding extra categories to your licence.
As well as being modern and economical, our 3.5 tonne vans have something else in abundance – plenty of space. But exactly how much space is on offer? And what weight can a 3.5 tonne van actually carry?
How much weight can 3.5T vans transport?
Whilst the weight you can carry varies depending on the exact make and model of 3.5 tonne van you hire, each has its load limit. A 3.5 tonne Luton van for instance can carry up to 1,300kg of weight.
Load limits are there for a reason. They guarantee optimum safety for you and other road users, with the van able to be handled effectively and safely. Braking capacities can be compromised if you don’t adhere to the load limitations of your specific van make and model. The performance of the van may also be impacted if you exceed the load limit.
Exceeding the load limit could put unnecessary strain on the van and its components, with damage to the axles and tyres common in overloaded vehicles.
Is there anything else I should keep in mind when loading?
Our hire team will be able to advise you on the exact load limit of the van you are hiring. Each make and model has a gross vehicle weight and load weight. The load weight refers to how much your belongings and other baggage weighs, whilst the gross vehicle weight takes everything into consideration, i.e. the weight of the van, driver, passengers, load and fuel.
By law, you cannot exceed the gross vehicle weight. If you do, you will face fines of up to £300 and could even be issued an on the spot fine of £500 if caught. Penalty points may also be added to your licence. You could even be asked to unload the vehicle in order to proceed with your journey.
Each individual axle of the van has its own weight limit too. By adhering to individual axle limits, you are ensuring that your load is evenly distributed. Overloading either the front or rear axle however is dangerous and can leave you subject to fines. The weight of your passengers is another factor you should consider as this can push you over the gross vehicle weight limit.
How can I make sure I don’t exceed these weight limits?
Planning ahead is the key to avoiding dangerous overloading. If you are moving home or business premises, you should have a clear idea about how much you need to transport before you go ahead and hire a van. We can advise you on the right size and number of vans for your house or office move. You may want to complete your move over a number of journeys to keep the weight of the load below the limit.
You could also hire a trailer to transport more belongings in one trip. To be on the safe side, we’d recommend visiting a local weighbridge to check the weight of your van and its load before embarking on your journey. You can find your nearest weighbridge here.
What can this van group be used for?
We’ve mentioned that our 3.5 tonne vans can be useful when undertaking home and office moves but they can be hired for so much more. Those looking to complete deliveries of large equipment and other items can hire our vans. Our vans can also be hired for events, such as conferences and exhibitions, where you have to transport goods to a venue and return them to your business premises later.
