How old to hire a carVehicle rental provides an opportunity to get onto the road for countless drivers. Here at Collison Vehicle Rental, we deliver vehicles for all occasions as a result, meaning whatever your circumstances you can harness freedom, flexibility and great value for money. Vehicle rental is a great option for so many reasons, providing the wheels you need to move house, go on holiday and get to work. Whatever the reason behind your rental, there are a number of criteria you have to fulfil before driving off our forecourt.

Here we reveal more about one of our key criteria – your age. But how old do you have to be to rent a car?

At what age can I rent a vehicle?

All drivers renting from us must be aged between 21 and 75. They must also hold a full UK car driving licence. We ask for a minimum of two years driving experience. Other driving licence requirements are applicable when renting one of our larger vehicles, with those looking to rent a larger minibus needing a category C licence to do so. If you passed your driving test before 1997, category C was given as standard on licences.

If you are over 75 years of age, renting a car from us may still be possible, subject to insurance approval. Additional insurance clearance is required, and our team will be more than happy to obtain this on your behalf.

What if I have motoring convictions?

To rent a vehicle, you must hold a clean driving licence. During the rental process, we work with you to obtain the right insurance for your rental requirements. Our team will require information regarding any current, previous or pending motoring offences. Please note this doesn’t include parking offences.

You should also be prepared to provide further details about any motoring accidents that you’ve been involved in during the last three years. Physical or mental infirmities that may affect driving ability (including diabetes, epilepsy and heart complaints) must be disclosed too. If you have had any car insurance policies or renewals refused or cancelled, you will have to provide us with further information regarding these before we can hire to you.

What if I don’t have a UK driving licence?

If you fulfil our other criteria but don’t have a UK driving licence, don’t panic, we may still be able to rent to you. Specialist insurance cover will be arranged on your behalf, all we need is a few extra details from you.
