For drivers aged 75 or over however, renting a car may be more difficult with many car hire companies setting upper age limits.
At Collision Vehicle Rental, we specialise in renting vehicles of all sizes for all occasions. In this blog post, we take a closer look at our hire policy for over 75s, but the question is – can you ever be ‘too old’ to hire a vehicle?
Rental vehicles for the over 75s
As a general rule of thumb, we request that drivers are aged between 21 and 75, but we don’t exclude those aged over 75.
Here at Collision Vehicle Rental, our rental quotation covers everything you need to get on the road. This means every quote includes the cost of rental, insurance, breakdown cover and VAT. For older customers, aged 75 or over, we require additional insurance clearance from our underwriters before we can finalise the hire.
We work with you to ensure we have the information to process your rental insurance policy. With this in mind, we recommend that you allow at least two hours during office hours from Monday to Friday to gain this clearance.
Other considerations when hiring from us
Regardless of their age, all drivers looking to hire a vehicle from us must have a full and clean UK driving licence that they’ve held for at least two years. Those looking to hire a large minibus will also need additional licence categories and driving qualifications if their licence was issued after 1997. Licences issued before 1st January 1997 automatically qualify in the C category required to drive larger minibuses.
All licence holders can drive a van weighing up to 3.5 tonnes – this includes our long wheel base and extra-long wheel base or Luton sized vans – under their standard UK driving licence.
To obtain insurance clearance from our underwriters, drivers (including those aged 75 or over) must disclose whether they’ve had insurance proposals declined, policies cancelled or renewals refused. If you’ve had to pay an increased premium or special conditions have been imposed by a current or previous insurer we’d like to know more about that too. Physical and mental issues that could affect your driving ability must also be shared, along with a medical history of diabetes, fits/seizures or heart conditions.
If you have had any motoring accidents (whether you were at fault or not) or have any current or pending motoring convictions, our team will need further details.

Getting started with Collison Vehicle Rental
Getting on the road in your very own hire vehicle couldn’t be easier. Our service is extremely convenient, you can browse our collection of high quality hire vehicles online and reserve your car or van via our website too.
If you’d prefer to choose and hire your vehicle in branch or are ready to pick up the car or van you reserved online, simply come along to our Waterlooville headquarters with the necessary documentation. All we need is your driving licence to confirm your eligibility to drive; a passport, employment card or other form of photo ID other than your driving licence to prove your identity; and a utility bill or bank statement from the last three months as proof of address.
Before you come in branch you should also use your National Insurance number and driving licence to check your driving endorsement history online. By doing so, you’ll generate a case sensitive code, which should be brought with you when you hire or sent to our team in advance. If you are unable to use this online service, we’re happy to do this with you on the day.
Once we’ve made copies of your ID, printed your driving endorsement history, and gained insurance clearance, we’ll go through the rental agreement with you. This rental agreement will then be signed and payment at the agreed price taken. We accept all forms of credit and debit card other than American Express. You will also be required to leave a deposit of £250 (this increases to £500 on some vehicles, such as our luxury hire cars and minibuses). This deposit will be held for the duration of the hire and refunded back onto your card as soon as you return your hire vehicle to us.
Before you drive off into the sunset, we will accompany you to check over the hire vehicle, pointing out any damage or peculiarities before you drive away. All details will be noted on your check sheet to ensure the vehicle is returned in this same condition.
